Nissan to mark 25 years of UK manufacturing
Nissan Sunderland, the UK's largest ever car plant, celebrated its 25th birthday yesterday (September 8th) and the firm has held a special ceremony to mark the occasion.
During its first year, the plant manufactured 5,139 Nissan Bluebirds and this has been boosted year on year, with the firm making 423,262 cars last year from the north-east factory.
To mark the occasion, Nissan is to update the time capsule placed at the plant on its opening day.
A model of the Nissan Qashqai, a telephone directory, newspapers, a Sunderland AFC shirt and a host of other items were placed in the capsule.
Carlos Ghosn, chairman and chief executive Officer of Nissan Motor Company, commented: "I celebrate this milestone with the Nissan Sunderland Plant and commend the significant achievements of the plant and its employees over the past 25 years.
"As the UK's largest car plant, biggest car exporter, and soon battery plant ... Sunderland is a beacon of Nissan's exemplary leadership in manufacture, management and technology, which define a global car company in the 21st century."
