Peterborough Secure Bristol Street Motors Final Slot
Peterborough United are the first time to earn a place at Wembley for the Bristol Street Motors Trophy final after securing victory against Blackpool at Bloomfield Road.
The semi-final tie came three days after the two sides had gone up against each other in League 1, with an injury time goal from Karamoko Dembele giving Blackpool all three points.
This time around it was Posh who emerged on top after a controlled performance on the Lancashire coast.
Although the home side started well, Peterborough soon got a foothold in the game and were on top as Richard O’Donnell in the Blackpool goal was forced into a number of saves to keep the scores level.
However, eight minutes before the break he could do nothing to prevent Malik Mothersille smashing in the opening goal when he drove the ball into the top corner after a deft touch from Ephron Mason-Clark.
After the break, Blackpool started to see more of the ball – particularly after the introduction of Dembele and Kylian Kouassi – but were unable to put Jed Steer under serious pressure in the away goal.
Mason-Clark almost doubled the lead when he beat the ‘keeper only to be denied by a goal line clearance from Marvin Ekpiteta, before the second goal arrived with ten minutes to go from the penalty spot.
Ricky-Jade Jones burst into the box and when he went down under a challenge from O’Donnell, the referee deemed it to be a foul and Harrison Burrows smashed home the spot kick.
Burrows then added his second in added time with a shot into the corner to sent Peterborough through to the final, where they will play the winner of the second semi-final between Bradford and Wycombe Wanderers.
