Why is it so important to check my tyres?
It's important to regularly check your tyres as it helps to keep you and your passengers safe on the road. Plus, tyres in optimal conditional contribute to better fuel efficiency, helping you to save at the pumps.
Worn, under-inflated tyres, or having the wrong type of tyres fitted to your vehicle can be a serious safety risk - plus these factors will have a negative impact on fuel consumption, meaning you'll have to fill up at the pumps more often.
Once tyres reach a certain level of wear, they can become noisier on the road and harm the environment by polluting the air with rubber particles. UK law requires your vehicle is fitted with the correct type and size of tyre, for the purpose it is being used.
If your tyres are over or under-inflated enough to be deemed unroadworthy, you can risk three penalty points on your licence and a fine of up to £2,500 per tyre.

Yes, your cars tyres may make a small amount of noise while driving. However, if you hear anything abnormal, or the car tyres feel strange, its a good idea to get them checked.
Some cars may have different sized tyres at the front and rear of the car. You can find out the size on the sidewall of the tyres, which will be displayed as a string of numbers. The cars tyre width is the first three digits marked on your tyre. The next two digits showcase the height of the tyre as a percentage of the tyre width. For example, the height of the tyre may be 30, or 30% of the tyre width.
The next letter in the code shows you the tyre construction. Usually, car tyres are made with a radial construction, so youll likely see a letter R. After this, the two number indicate the tyre diameter. For example, the tyre diameter may be 15, or 16 inches.
Finally, the last two numbers display the load rating or maximum capacity of a passenger car tyre. And the last letter indicates the speed rating of your vehicle the higher the letter alphabetically, the faster the car.
You can find information about your tyres from your current tyres, your vehicle handbook, or inside the fuel flap. In most models, the information is also displayed inside the glove box and inside the drivers door panel.
We recommend taking a photo of the side of your tyre, so youll have the size of your tyre to hand. Check the question above for guidance on how to read the code on your tyre to determine its size.
If your tyre tread is less than 1.6mm, this is illegal and will result in an MOT failure. Its also good to note that if you are found to be driving with illegal tyres, you may receive points on your licence. Plus, you might receive a fine of up to £2,500 per tyre.
