Burnley Battle Back To Go Third

Burnley battled back from a goal down to secure a dramatic home win against Portsmouth and move up to third in the EFL Championship.

The Bristol Street Motors-backed side was chasing a second successive victory after a win away at Leeds but it was the visitors who carved out the early chances at Turf Moor as they chased a first win since gaining promotion back to the second tier.

Connor Ogilvie glanced a header against the post from a corner as Portsmouth looked to grab the lead, with the home side struggling to fashion a serious effort on the away goal.

Portsmouth’s pressure told just before the break when they went ahead after a move down the left ended with a cross from Paddy Lane being converted by Callum Lang at the back post – silencing the home crowd.

Burnley continued to struggle to find a way through a defence that was being marshalled well by the returning Regan Poole but the introduction of Jeremy Sarmiento would prove to be the turning point as the Clarets fought back.

A moment of magic from the Ecuadorian winger as he curled in his first goal since joining on loan from Brighton from the edge of the box just minutes after coming onto the pitch.

That goal boosted the home side and deep into stoppage time, Burnley fashioned a winner when Josh Brownhill drilled in the winning goal to secure all three points.

The win means Burnley now sit third in the standings ahead of a trip to another promoted side in the shape of Oxford United.
