The Bristol Street Motors-backed side had ended a run of four games without a win in the final game prior to the break, and was bidding to maintain a push for the automatic promotion spots during the trip to Ashton Gate.
The home side had the first real chance of the game when a shot from Anis Mehmeti inside the box took a deflection and went wide of the goal – with the Burnley defence having been caught out by Max Bird springing the offside trap.
However it was Burnley who grabbed the lead when Luca Koleosho burst down the left hand side before feeding the ball in for Josh Brownhill to shoot at goal.
Although his deflected effort was stopped by Max O’Leary, the ball fell kindly for Jaidon Anthony to smash it home and put the Clarets ahead.
Veteran Jay Rodriguez headed against the bar as Burnley looked to take a two goal lead and continued to push hard in the second half.
Koleosho was somehow denied from close range by O’Leary before Hannibal Mejbri’s follow-up was blocked by a defender with the goal gaping.
Anthony then curled an effort just over the bar before a late scare at the other end saw Bristol City fans scream for a penalty when the ball seemed to strike Brownhill following a free kick.
However, the referee waved away the shouts to leave Burnley celebrating victory – leaving them two points off the automatic promotion spots in fourth place.
