The Bristol Street Motors-backed side had been held to a draw by Preston in the final game before the break, and returned to action against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough chasing a result that would move Scott Parker and his men to the top of the table.
Going into the game on a six-game unbeaten streak, Burnley started well as Zian Flemming went close early on and the home side spurned chances of their own before the Clarets went ahead.
Jaidon Anthony was able to celebrate his first goal for the Club when he pounced on a poor clearance from the Wednesday defence to fire the ball home and the visitors then doubled their lead early in the second half when Josh Brownhill was quickest to react after a Flemming effort was saved and made it 2-0.
The win put Burnley on top of the standings for 24 hours before Sunderland reclaimed their position with victory a day later.
Results elsewhere meant Burnley had slipped out of the top two before a trip to Hull City and the hopes of reclaiming second spot didn’t appear great at half-time at the MKM Stadium as the home side held the lead.
Xavier Simons’ deflected effort just before the break saw Hull take the lead, and Burnley were only able to draw level with 13 minutes to go after a cross from Anthony was converted by Flemming – marking his first goal since arriving from Millwall.
Anthony had a chance to win it late on but the point was still enough to move Burnley back ahead of Leeds into second place in the table.
The final match of the month saw Burnley return to Turf Moor to face a Queens Park Rangers side without a win in seven games, but the visitors dug in to salvage a point as they kept a clean sheet for the first time this season.
Burnley had chances to nick the points as Flemming, Josh Laurent and Josh Cullen all went close – with the home side having 22 shots compared to just two for the visitors.
The goalless draw means Burnley remain second in the standings ahead of the next match against Millwall.
