The Bristol Street Motors-backed side headed into the game having moved into the top two in the EFL Championship with a solid victory on the road against Stoke in the previous match but faced a more challenging outing against a ‘Boro side expected to feature in the promotion battle.
Burnley started the game well enough in tricky conditions thanks to the wind but it was the visitors who grabbed the lead when a neat through ball from Dan Barlaser split the defence and Anfernee Dijksteel was able to beat James Trafford to open the scoring.
The home side responded well, with Josh Cullen having a deflected shot turned over the bar by Seny Dieng, and the ‘keeper also blocking an effort from Jeremy Sarmiento as Burnley looked to level the tie.
‘Boro came close to a second when highly-rated youngster Ben Doak cut in from the wing and fired just wide of the post but Burnley managed to equalise before the break when Connor Roberts let fly from distance and his shot looped over Dieng and into the net.
Josh Brownhill fired over before the break as Burnley looked to go ahead but having stayed level at the break, the game would ultimately end up as a draw after a second half where ‘Boro could well have stolen the win – with George Edmondson heading wide when well-placed and Delano Burgzorg hitting a tame shot at Trafford when he should have done better.
Burnley did have further chances, most notably from Brownhill, but the points were shared to leave the Clarets third in the standings going into the mid-week game with Derby County.
