The Bristol Street Motors-backed side went into the game on the back of a solid unbeaten run of ten games having closed to within a point of Leeds United.
Burnley wasted little time in hitting the front against Watford as Jaidon Anthony fired the opening goal within ten minutes of the start.
A cross from the left from Josh Brownhill at the back post and his volley was good enough to beat ‘keeper Daniel Bachmann and nestle in the corner.
The home side should have been further ahead by the break but missed a number of chances, not least when Hannibal failed to hit the target with a shot from just outside the box.
Hannibal was involved however when Burnely did extend their advantage just after the hour mark, with the Tunisian playing the final pass in a flowing team move into the path of Brownhill to curl the ball into the far corner.
Anthony went close to his second with a shot well saved by Bachmann before Watford finally managed to put pressure on the Burnley goal and grabbed a goal back through Kwadwo Baah.
It would be too little, too late however as Burnley took the three points ahead of a festive spell that kicks off on Boxing Day with a huge game away at league leaders Sheffield United before a trip to Middlesbrough and a home tie with Stoke City.
