Burnley Slip To Third With Home Draw

Burnley missed the chance to go top of the EFL Championship after being held to a home draw by Preston North End in a Lancashire derby at Turf Moor.

The Bristol Street Motors-backed side went into the game knowing a win would secure top spot in the league standings after Sunderland and Leeds shared the points on Friday evening.

The visitors arguably had the better of the chances in the first half of the game, which was hotly contested but ended without any goals – with each side restricted to a single shot on target.

Preston did find the net only to see an effort from Emil Riis ruled out for offside, which would prove to be the best chance of the opening 45 minutes.

In the second half, Burnley had the better of the play but the game would continue to be limited in terms of meaningful chances, with the end result being a goalless draw that leaves Burnley third in the standings.

However, a single loss from the opening nine games of the season means Scott Parker’s side are just a point off stop spot heading into the first international break of the season.

Action resumes with a trip to Sheffield Wednesday on 19 October.
