Chevrolet has welcomed a government pledge to provide grants to customers purchasing plug-in electric cars.
The manufacturer, which has created the first extended range electric vehicle in the form of the Volt, backed the government's commitment to contributing £5,000 towards purchases of plug-in electric models.
Chevrolet notes that the Volt will be eligible for the grant scheme when it goes on sale in the UK in 2012.
UK managing director Mark Terry said the company is "very pleased" to be included in the programme.
"[The Volt] is an electric car you can use without having to make any significant changes to your lifestyle, and we believe that is the key to making customers accept such innovative technology," Mr Terry added.
According to the company, the Chevrolet Volt has a range of 300 miles, 50 of which can be covered on electric power alone.
Meanwhile, this month saw the launch of the Chevrolet Orlando, a seven-seat multi-purpose vehicle with highly competitive running and maintenance costs.
