Mazda MX-30 R-EV Named Plug-In Hybrid of the Year at 2024 What Car? Awards

  • The Mazda MX-30 R-EV fought off tough competition for the title of ‘Plug-In Hybrid of the Year’.
  • The vehicle offers an impressive range, enhanced fuel economy, and a smooth driving experience.
  • The MX-30 R-EV joined the Mazda lineup last year, enhancing the manufacturer’s electrified offering.

Mazda’s super SUV, the MX-30 R-EV has taken a prestigious title at the recent What Car? Awards. Having only joined the lineup last year, it has been named Plug-In Hybrid of the Year for 2024 by the motoring publication.

Read on to learn what impressed judges the most about the Mazda MX-30 R-EV.

Innovative rotary engine

The MX-30 R-EV is not your typical plug-in hybrid (PHEV). While other PHEVs feature a conventional combustion engine with pistons, thMX-30 R-EV has a unique rotary engine. This works to recharge the battery, rather than drive the wheels.

This electric power combined with a 50-litre petrol tank provides drivers with over 400 miles of range – around 50 of which will be pure electric. This makes it ideal for those who want an electric car for everyday trips, but also want flexibility and assurance on longer drives. With a WLTP CO2 output of just 21g/km, it is an attractive choice for environmentally conscious drivers.

Additionally, the MX-30 R-EV demonstrates smooth and effortless performance, making it a joy to drive.

Premium interior

The inside of the MX-30 feels spacious and invitingHigh-quality recycled materials have been used throughout, in a nod to the vehicle’s eco-credentials.

It features an intuitive infotainment system that keeps everyone connected on board.

With a boot capacity of 350 litres, extending to 1,155 litres with the rear seats folded down, there’s ample room for everyday cargo.

Stylish design

The MX-30 R-EV looks much the same as the stylish all-electric MX-30. It features a few additional details such as rotor badges and unique wheel designs to distinguish itself as the hybrid sibling.

The sleek and elegant exterior is enhanced with subtle lines. Modern multi-tone colour schemes help accentuate the vehicle’s streamlined body. These include:

  • Ceramic with Brilliant Black roof
  • Zircon Sand with Black roof
  • Soul Red Crystal with Black roof

Additionally, rear-hinged ‘freestyle’ back doors really set the MX-30 R-EV apart from the crowd.

An award-winning package

The Mazda MX-30 R-EV triumphed over the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLC in its category. This is a testament to its advanced technology, design, and performance. It promises enhanced fuel economy and is also one of the cheapest plug-in hybrids available right now.

Commenting on the award, What Car? Editor, Steve Huntingford, said: “The Mazda MX-30 R-EV combines fun handling with a well-controlled ride, while its classy and distinctive interior features one of the most user-friendly infotainment systems around. In the real world, we also found the MX-30 R-EV to be much more sparing on petrol than its larger PHEV rivals. And unlike them, it doesn’t just make financial sense as a company car; it’s also a very cost-effective private purchase.”
