At the infamous Nrburgring, sub 10-minute laps are usually the reserve of brand new or well-tuned cars.
Not according to this video, which sees a first generation Mazda MX-5 thrown around the 12.93mile track in 9:21.8, with racing driver Gabriele Piana at the wheel.
The 90hp sports convertible was first released in 1989 with a 1.6 litre straight 4 engine. The body is of monocoque construction, with detachable front and rear subframes.
The MX-5 shows impressive handling on the German track. This can be partly contributed to the Powerplant Frame (PPF) which provides a rigid connection between the engine and differential, minimizing flex and contributing to the responsive handling.
Whilst the MX-5's time is minutes off of those of the Porsche 918 Spyder (6:57) and the 2015 Lamborghini Aventador SV (6:59.73), this two seater, rear wheel drive roadster can proudly say it beat both a Ford Transit (10:08.49) and a Jaguar S-Type Diesel (9:59) around the track (although the latter was driven by Jeremy Clarkson for a Top Gear challenge).
