Lowering the drink driving limit might have greater repercussions for responsible motorists than more dangerous drivers, it has been suggested.
The recent North Review of drink and drug driving laws has outlined proposals to reduce the current limit of 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood to 50 mg.
However, motoring body the Association of British Drivers (ABD) has said such a cut would only serve to punish responsible drivers who keep their alcohol intake to a minimum.
According to findings cited by the ABD, the 80 mg threshold was set because it is at this point that the risk of having an accident increases.
"There is simply no point in criminalising drivers who have a blood alcohol content that isn't dangerous," commented spokesman for the ABD Nigel Humphries, who added that limits should be set based on science.
