Nissan to build new model in UK
Nissan has delivered a huge boost to the UK's manufacturing industry after revealing that a forthcoming model is to be built at its plant in Sunderland.
The as-yet unnamed model is set to be unveiled in 2014 and will create up to 225 new jobs at the factory.
It is also expected that a further 900 jobs will be created in the supply chain, giving a boost the local economy in the north-east.
Nissan's move comes as part of a £127 million UK investment plan, which is backed by £8.2 million of government money through the Regional Growth Fund.
According to Toshiyuki Shiga, Nissan's chief operating officer, the decision comes as the firm's models are enjoying increased popularity across Europe.
"In Europe, Nissan has achieved record growth in recent years by providing innovative, customer-focused models like Qashqai and Juke that are designed, developed and produced within the region," he commented.
"Nissan already produces more vehicles in Europe than any other Asian manufacturer and the model announced today will bring world-class quality and leading technology to our customers at the heart of the European C-segment."
