The Euro NCAP safety test features rigorous assessments to determine how well vehicles perform in certain crash scenarios (frontal, rear and side tests) regarding the safety of the passengers. Areas of the vehicle that are assessed include Adult Occupant Protection, Child Occupant Protection, Vulnerable Road User Protection and Safety Assist features.
The overall scores for each area for the Clio were:
Adult Occupant Protection: 96%
Child Occupant Protection: 89%
Vulnerable Road Users: 72%
Safety Assist: 75%
Let's review these scores in more depth.
Adult Occupant Protection
The Renault Clio performed well in the frontal offset test, with the passenger compartment remaining stable and all body areas that are classed as critical were protected well. Both dummy readings showed that the knees and the femurs of both the passenger and driver received good protection too. These results of protection could also be applied to passengers of different sizes and to those who would possibly be sitting in different positions.
The Clio scored maximum points in the side barrier test due to the excellent protection of all critical body parts. In the more severe side barrier test, the Clio also performed well, with protection to the chest awarded adequately and other parts receiving good protection.
Furthermore, whiplash injuries were also assessed. The head restraints and front seats provided good protection in a scenario whereby the car was hit from behind, whilst the back seats also provided good protection from whiplash injuries too.
Finally, the AEB (Autonomous Emergency Braking) system, which is installed in the Renault Clio, contributed to protecting passengers from whiplash injuries and performed well at low speeds, which is the most common driving situation in which whiplash injuries happen.
Child Occupant Protection
Protection to child occupants received an overall score of 89% due to good to adequate protection being recorded on the 6 and 10-year-old dummies in both the front and side collision tests.
Furthermore, the Clio was awarded for the ability to accommodate a rear-ward facing child seat in the front passenger seat, whilst the airbag was disabled, and other restraint types that are compatible with the Clio could also be installed securely and safely.
Vulnerable Road Users
Concerning vulnerable road users, the Clio did perform well, especially the bonnet which provided good to adequate protection to the head of a pedestrian if they were to be hit. Having said that, there were some poor results recorded, more specifically on the stiff windscreen pillars. The pelvis also received good protection in some places, however, there were weak recordings noted. Finally, the AEB system was again tested and worked well in detecting road users, like cyclists and pedestrians, to prevent/mitigate accidents.
Safety Assist
Other safety features included in the Renault Clio were also acknowledged and these included:
- Seatbelt Reminder System
- Lane Assist
- Speed Assistance System
Finally, the AEB system was tested to see how well it performed when other vehicles were driving at faster speeds, and the results highlighted good performance.
