Euro NCAP assesses four areas in the tests, which include Adult Occupant Protection, Child Occupant Protection, Vulnerable Road User Protection and Safety Assist features. The vehicle undergoes different crash scenarios (frontal, rear and side tests) and is marked on how well the vehicle and its features protect these four important areas.
The overall scores for each area for the Captur were:
Adult Occupant Protection: 96%
Child Occupant Protection: 83%
Vulnerable Road Users: 75%
Safety Assist: 74%
Let’s review these scores in more depth.
Adult Occupant Protection
In the frontal offset test, the Captur showed good protection to all critical body parts. More specifically, the knees and femurs of the driver and passenger were well protected, and it was evident that a similar level of protection would occur if the passenger and driver differed in size or sat in different positions. In the full-width rigid barrier test, the Captur provided good/adequate protection to all critical body parts for both the driver and the rear passengers.
Full marks were awarded to the Renault Captur in the side barrier test, showcasing an exceptional performance. Even in the more serious side barrier pole test, the chest area of the driver was adequately protected, whilst the rest of the body received good protection.
Whiplash injuries were also assessed in the event of a rear-end collision. The head restraints and all of the seats showcased good protection against this type of injury.
Furthermore, the Autonomous Emergency Braking system further enhanced safety against whiplash injuries due to potential collisions, at low speeds, being avoided in most scenarios thanks to the AEB system.
Child Occupant Protection
Euro NCAP uses two dummies, a 6-year-old and a 10-year-old, to assess Child Occupant Protection. The Captur is designed to enable the front airbag to be disabled to accommodate a rear-ward facing child seat in the front. It was rewarded for this and for also providing clear instructions on the status of the airbag to increase safety.
Unfortunately, in the vehicle’s handbook, it does state that a universal child restraint cannot be fitted in the centre seat in the back, and therefore, the Captur failed on this part of the assessment.
Vulnerable Road Users
The bonnet performed well, with almost all test areas providing good/adequate protection to pedestrians that were involved in an accident. However, although the bumper was acknowledged for giving good protection to pedestrians’ legs, the pelvis received poor protection.
However, the Renault Captur features an AEB system, which can detect any roadside hazards, including cyclists, pedestrians and other vehicles. This was tested and performed well, with all potential collisions either avoided or reduced in all test scenarios.
Safety Assist
Other safety features included in the Renault Captur were also assessed, including:
- Seatbelt Reminder System
- Lane Assist
- Speed Limit System
All systems aided the driver, and the AEB system performed adequately when other vehicles were driving at faster speeds.
