The UK has witnessed a "massive reduction" in fatalities caused by road accidents, it has been claimed.
According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), figures dropped 33 per cent for 16-19 year olds, 25 per cent for people in their 70s and 22 per cent for people in their 80s since 2008.
The statistics form the core of the organisation's Younger and Older Road Users report, published earlier this month.
Neil Greig, IAM director of policy and research, said the research shows that young drivers in their teens and 20s become half as likely to be involved in a traffic accident every five years.
This fact highlights the importance of post-test training for inexperienced motorists, Mr Greig stated.
"A renewed focus on young drivers, which provides them with opportunities to gain further experience in a controlled and safe environment, is of utmost importance," he added.
The IAM has a membership of over 100,000.
