Motorists have been shown to be wasting millions of pounds in fuel every year by driving on under-inflated tyres.
Used car buyers who have got out of the habit of checking their tyres are properly inflated could be contributing to the £0.7 billion lost through fuel every year.
The findings, from TyreSafe, could prompt motorists to make checks on their car's tyre pressure amid rising petrol prices.
"The recent rises in petrol prices are hitting drivers hard, yet many are failing to make one very simple check and adjustment that could save them hundreds of pounds over the year," commented Stuart Jackson, chairman of TyreSafe.
Used car buyers could conduct simple checks once a month when their tyres are cold to make their fuel go further, saving them money and helping to reduce their carbon footprint.
Recently, the group also advised against using part-worn tyres to save money as the measure could turn out to be a false economy.
