It has been declared by Axalta paint supplier that 38% of all vehicles are white. The most second common colour is black with 19% of the world’s road users driving a black vehicle and grey comes in at third place with 15% of vehicles being this colour.
This is the third year running in which white vehicles have accounted for 38% of vehicles globally. It is no surprise that black is known to be favoured by drivers as it remains the preferred colour for premium vehicles. It has been said by Axalta that 62% of luxury vehicles in Europe are either black or grey.
Despite white being the most popular overall colour, this varies between different regions. For example, white accounts for 57% of the vehicles in China, whereas white is in competition with grey for the top spot in Europe, each accounting for 25% of vehicles.
5% of China’s vehicles are made up of yellow and gold, however, these colours are unpopular in many other countries. It has been found that blue vehicles aren’t as popular in China as they make up only 3% of vehicles in the country.
The statistics comprised by Axalta do not include separate figures for the UK, but Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders information showed that the UK’s favourite car colour last year was grey.
Scotland and the Channel Islands kept up with global trends and favoured white, which was also the most popular colour for drivers of vehicles with zero-emissions. In 2019, black was the preferred colour for executive and luxury salon cars.
