Burnley Extend Run With Unbeaten January
Burnley’s impressive record in the EFL Championship continued across January, as the Clarets maintained their push for an immediate return to the Premier League.
A solid run of results over the festive period left the Bristol Street Motors-backed side sitting second in the table as part of a three-way battle for top spot alongside Leeds United and Sheffield United.
Off the back of a goalless draw at home to Stoke City, Scott Parker and his side made the short trip along the M65 to face Blackburn Rovers in a local derby.
A tight affair would be decided by a single goal, with Zian Flemming nodding in a cross from Bashir Humphreys on the hour mark to secure the three points.
Following victory in the FA Cup away at Reading, Burnley welcomed fellow promotion hopefuls Sunderland to Turf Moor for a game that came alive in the final ten minutes.
The game appeared to be heading for a draw until four minutes from time when Sunderland were awarded a penalty, only for James Trafford to deny Wilson Isidor from the spot.
Astonishingly, Sunderland were then awarded another penalty in stoppage time and Trafford once again kept Isidor at bay to secure a point and maintain Burnley’s unbeaten home record.
The long trip to face Plymouth Argyle resulted in an impressive 5-0 win, with all of the goals coming during a dominant first half.
Flemming and Josh Laurent both netted twice, with Josh Cullen also getting on the scoresheet.
The month then came to a close with another big game at home to leaders Leeds United, with a hard fought draw allowing the Clarets to extend their unbeaten record out to 16 games to sit third in the standings – three points off top spot.
February kicks off with a trip to Portsmouth, which is one of five scheduled Championship games alongside an FA Cup fourth round tie with Southampton.
