Burnley Left To Rue Disallowed Strike In West Brom Draw

Burnley were left to wonder what might have been at the Hawthorns after a contentious disallowed goal saw the Clarets miss out on victory in their EFL Championship fixture with West Bromwich Albion.

The Bristol Street Motors-backed side was bidding to bounce back from a 1-0 loss to Millwall at the weekend, with WBA looking to end a run of five successive draws that had dropped them away from the head of the table.

The first half was short on a serious goalmouth action, with the home side missing the chance to hit the front when a back-post volley from John Swift failed to trouble James Trafford and sailed high over the bar.

At the other end, Zian Flemming then saw his header blocked to prevent the Clarets from going ahead before former WBA man Jeremy Sarmiento spurned the best chance when he broke through only to be denied by Alex Palmer.

It looked like Burnley had broken the deadlock ten minutes into the second-half when Jaidon Anthony got on the end of a cross from Lucas Pires to nod the ball into the net only for the referee to rule the goal out for the slightest of pushes on Callum Styles.

Burnley went close again when Pires struck the bottom of the post with the ‘keeper beaten, with Josh Cullen flashing a header across the box that Flemming couldn’t get on the end of.

The decision to disallow the goal would prove to be crucial as the game petered out to a draw, with Burnley remaining fourth in the table going into a weekend fixture at home to Swansea City.
