Burnley Return To Winning Ways

Burnley returned to winning ways in the EFL Championship with a hard-fought victory on the road against Leeds United.

The Bristol Street Motors-backed side went into the first game after the international break seeking to fight back from the defeat to Sunderland and the draw with Blackburn that had rounded out the month of August.

Leeds had enjoyed an unbeaten start to the season, whilst Burnley had a poor record at Elland Road – having tasted defeat on seven of their previous nine games.

Burnley almost suffered a disastrous start when a loose ball from Luca Koleosho put his side in trouble, allowing Mateo Joseph to burst through the middle before shooting wide of the post.

Leeds created the better chances early on but it was the visitors who hit the front just before the 20 minute mark, when Manor Solomon slipped whilst in possession deep in the Burnley half.

Koleosho, who had just extended his contract to stay with Burnley, charged forward towards the Leeds goal and fired a shot across Illan Meslier and into the corner to give the visitors the lead.

James Trafford produced a smart save from close range to then prevent Willy Gnonto from equalising before.a last gasp tackle from Joe Worrall then denied Soloman the chance to make amends for his earlier slip.

Leeds continued to push after the break, with Joseph forcing Trafford into a full-length save before a curling strike from Ethan Ampadu had to be tipped over the bar.

Burnley had chances at the other end but it was largely Leeds who dominated possession, with Scott Parker’s side holding firm for a vital three points that lifts the Clarets up into fourth in the standings.
