Hints and Tips for Driving Your Motability Car During the Summer Months
While longer, brighter days offer some of the easiest driving conditions, it’s still important to be prepared for them.
Read on to discover our top hints and tips for driving your Motability car during the summer months.
Try not to become dehydrated
British weather can be unpredictable with short periods of intense heat throughout the summer.
Even if you have your air-con on, driving in these conditions can be a struggle. Symptoms of dehydration can include feeling thirsty, dizzy, lightheaded or tired. It’s important to recognise these symptoms and act quickly.
Always be sure to keep a cold bottle of water in your car and take regular drinks to stay hydrated. If you are setting off on a longer trip, take regular breaks from driving in a cool, shaded area if possible.
Give your car a once over
The warmer temperatures can leave you wanting to hit the road and get out into the great outdoors as quickly as possible. But it’s important to check key items all year round to ensure a safe and easy drive.
Before you set off, check that you have enough fuel for your journey, and oil and coolant levels. If they are low, be sure to give them a quick top up. Oil and coolant help to keep your engine running smoothly by keeping it lubricated. They also help to reduce the risk of a breakdown or engine overheating.
You should also check that:
- Your tyres have a minimum of 3mm tread depth
- Windscreen washer fluid is topped up
- Wiper blades are working correctly
- No hazard warning lights are illuminated on the dashboard
Bring sun protection
If you are driving when the sun is at its strongest, it’s recommended to wear sunglasses to combat the increased glare. This gives you a clear view of the road ahead, as well as maintaining the safety of you and those around you.
Always wear suncream on long journeys, even if you won’t be stepping outside of the car too much. While you might be wondering why, but it’s because the sun’s UV rays can cause sunburn, even when sitting in your car.
Keep cool
The sweltering temperatures can leave you reaching for the air conditioning and winding your windows down. Be sure to pick the best option for you as using both isn’t efficient.
If you decide to switch on the air con, bear in mind that this can deplete your fuel or range if you have an electric Motability car. It’s recommended that you only use this for shorter periods.
Check your summer medication labels
If you are taking any medication for hay fever, it’s important to check for any possible side effects. Common side effects of these medications can include drowsiness.
If you are experiencing any kind of drowsiness, you mustn't drive your Motability car. Wait until this has passed, or if you do need to go somewhere, ask a named driver to drive for you.
Be aware of busy traffic
As people make the most of the warmer weather, the roads can become busier especially if you live near coastal areas. Always check what is going on around you, keeping an eye out for any cyclists, pedestrians, or motorbikes.
Always continue to leave plenty of room between you and cars in front of you in case any traffic unexpectedly comes to a standstill.
