Hyundai Reveals New INITIUM Hydrogen-Powered Concept Car

The new hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) demonstrates the brand’s commitment to hydrogen mobility.

Hyundai has revealed a new concept SUV, currently known as the INITIUM hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV).

Latin for ‘beginning’ or ‘first’, INITIUM reflects the brand’s expansion as a hydrogen energy pioneer. The concept is a preview of a new production FCEV that will be launched next year.

So, what is hydrogen fuel cell technology, and how will INITIUM be different from other electrified Hyundai cars? Read on to find out more.

What is a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV)?

Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles use an electric motor to turn the wheels, similar to battery electric vehicles (BEVs). Rather than being powered by a battery, they are powered by a fuel cell stack, where hydrogen combines with oxygen to produce electricity.

This is used to power the wheels without producing emissions – only water vapour comes out of the tailpipe. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are refilled at a hydrogen refuelling station, similar to a regular petrol station.

The benefits of these vehicles are that they are smooth and easy to drive like electric cars. While producing zero CO2 emissions and removing the need for recharging, unlike BEVs or plug-in hybrids. The challenge is the availability of hydrogen fuel as a resource, with more stations needed to facilitate a wider roll-out.

Only a few hundred hydrogen fuel cell vehicles can be found on UK roads currently. When it comes to cars, there are only two models available – the Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Nexo. Though this is something the Hyundai brand hopes to change.

INITIUM hydrogen FCEV

With the INITIUM hydrogen fuel cell concept, Hyundai’s focus is on three areas:

1. Increased range and enhanced performance

2. A spacious interior and luggage area

3. Safety and convenience

As it stands, the concept SUV aims to offer a driving range of more than 650km between top-ups. Hyundai also claims the INITIUM offers impressive acceleration, especially when overtaking.

The electric motor produces an output of 150kW, for a smoother drive in urban areas, while facilitating higher speeds on motorways.

Inside, the INITIUM concept presents a spacious, versatile interior that will make it a great family SUV. The second row offers ample room for rear passengers, creating a large living space. A large rear-door opening angle also makes it convenient for rear passengers to get in and out of.

An FCEV-specific route planner is included to make powering up more convenient. This allows the driver to locate charging stations en-route without using a separate app. They can also check availability at different stations to help plan ahead for their visit.

With Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) charging, the SUV can power household appliances and devices. The outdoor terminal connects to a 220V household socket, making the INITIUM ideal for more than just transportation.

The design is built on safety, with a multi-skeleton structure at the front for protection in the event of a collision. There is also a side body structure, and nine airbags in total for maximum safety.

Hyundai’s INITIUM fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) will be showcased at the Los Angeles Auto Show and Auto Guangzhou in November. The production version is expected to follow in the first half of 2025.
