In the Spotlight: Hyundai i30N
Very rarely does a car, hot-hatch or otherwise, come along and make quite as much noise as the Hyundai i30N – and we’re not just talking about the engine either (we’ll come onto that later!). The i30N has caused quite a stir for all the right reasons, rekindling our spark for finding the ultimate hot-hatch, and we needn’t look any further! WhatCar? Magazine have already named it their Hot Hatch of the Year (£20,000-£30,000) for 2018
Hyundai are no stranger to making nippy little hatchbacks, but they’re often refined and in the form of something a little more sensible - the i30N, however, is the first in their new line of performance cars. Hyundai say that the i30N is born on the track and it’s easy to see why. In this exclusive article, we shine the light on Hyundai’s first hot-hatch and pay tribute to some of its glowing highlights.
STYLING
The i30N sports an aggressive body kit that hugs the road and leaves heads turning. With deep front air intakes that cool the brakes and a large rear-wing for added downforce, Hyundai have focused on performance to the Nth degree! This car is an all-round stunner, especially in its signature Performance Blue - it stands out in any car park, and is a head turner on any road.
EACH TO THEIR OWN
Hyundai’s performance model will let you enjoy the thrill of the road exactly how you see fit, offering a fully customisable driving experience. You can alter the engine, rev-matching, suspension, steering and even the exhaust sound! With around 2,000 different combinations, you’re free to do what you what you want, and most manufacturers don’t give you the freedom!
PERFORMANCE AT HEART. DRIVER IN MIND.
The i30N truly is the complete article. It caters for all scenarios that our great British roads can throw at you. For those looking to throw the car into corners and really test it, its limited slip-differential will keep you stuck to the road and really put a smile on your face. That said, Hyundai also know how to do comfort, and they do it well; you can even pull the i30N back and loosen up the suspension to sit comfortably for those motorway hauls.
IT’S WHAT’S INSIDE THAT COUNTS
Let ‘s talk numbers! The hot-hatch is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, with even its standard trim producing 250bhp and seeing you manage 0-62mph in as little as 6.4 seconds. If you want to take things up a gear, the performance pack offers 275bhp and will see you achieve 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds - a tenth quicker than a Golf GTi performance, and a perfect candidate for those traffic light drag-races.
PRACTICALITY
Setting aside its performance capabilities, the i30N remains incredibly practical. With a good boot space of 395 litres and enough room to comfortably fit the whole family, Hyundai let you keep all bases covered. Their class-leading infotainment system caters for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, keeping you connected and entertained while on the road.
With a car like this, it’s hard to believe it’s taken Hyundai quite so long to enter the performance market, but now that they have, the i30N couldn’t have been a better place to start!
