Vehicle manufacturer Ford has announced its sales lead for March rose by 50 per cent for the month and for the year to date over last year's figures.

The firm announced the number of people investing in a new Ford rose by 18.7 per cent last month and by 14.2 per cent for the quarter.

Popular small vehicles the Fiesta and Focus models continued to dominate sales, although they were supported strongly by the Ka and Kuga vehicles.

Despite its compact dimensions and high street persona, the Ford Focus has extended its appeal to the likes of England and Essex cricket star Alastair Cook, who recently invested in an RS version of the vehicle.

Ford of Britain managing director Nigel Sharp commented: "Ford's success in the crucial plate change month of March is the result of our best-ever vehicle range and the impact of our spring marketing campaign, which established lower price points for the most popular models."

He added that the firm is more than 27,000 car sales ahead of its nearest competitor for the year to date, marking a rise of more than 50 per cent on the same period last year.
