Renault Master H2-Tech Prototype Revealed Ahead of 2025 Launch
The new hydrogen-powered variant of Renault’s leading van shows the potential for fuel cell technology.
With the Renault Master E-Tech, Renault’s leading large van was already excelling when it comes to efficiency. Now, the French manufacturer has revealed a hydrogen-powered variant - the All-New Renault Master H2-Tech.
With a prototype revealed at the IAA Transportation exhibition in Hannover, it’s set to offer a range of benefits to drivers. Read on for everything we know so far.
How do hydrogen-powered vehicles work?
First off, what exactly do we mean by hydrogen-powered vehicles? These are essentially being considered a form of electric vehicle, combining a lithium-ion battery and a fuel cell.
The fuel cell works alongside the battery to supply energy using hydrogen stored inside a pressurized tank. This gas (H2), along with dioxygen (O2) from the air is supplied to the fuel cell, where it undergoes a chemical reaction. This produces electricity, heat, and water vapour (H2O), which is released as a gas from a small tube underneath the vehicle.
Now we know the science, how does this benefit the new Master variant?
The All-New Renault Master H2-Tech
The All-New Renault Master H2-Tech is the product of HYVIA. A joint venture between the Renault Group and Plug, a leading turnkey provider of hydrogen and fuel cell solutions.
The HYVIA initiative not only aims to increase the uptake of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, but to be at the forefront of related services. From specific charging infrastructure to hydrogen supply.
Adding a new hydrogen powertrain to the Renault Master is part of the brand’s mission to achieve sustainable electric mobility. Bringing drivers increased operational availability and peace of mind with everyday use.
Renault has revealed the new model offers the best range in its segment, with up to 700km WLTP (around 434 miles). The addition of hydrogen power also reduces strain on the electric battery. Allowing the Master to deliver in the less optimal weather conditions like winter.
What’s more, the All-New Renault Master H2-Tech also offers more convenient recharging thanks to hydrogen power. The battery can be charged at many rapid charging stations, while the hydrogen fuel cell takes only five minutes to refuel at a hydrogen station.
This secondary recharging method is ideal for during the day when drivers need to top up their range. Meaning less time spent waiting at the charging station, and more time on the road.
Other features revealed about the new Master variant include an integrated multimedia system. This is designed to optimise both range and H2 consumption, for increased efficiency.
