Sunderland Remain Second Despite Watford Setback

Sunderland remain second in the EFL Championship despite sliding to a second successive away defeat at Watford.

The Black Cats headed for Vicarage Road on the back of an impressive win against Middlesbrough in the Tees-Wear derby, whilst Watford were looking to end a run of three games without a win in the league to move back towards the play-off places.

With rivals West Bromwich Albion having suffered a surprise loss at Sheffield Wednesday, Sunderland had the chance to go to the top of the table, but it was Watford who started the game stronger.

Anthony Patterson was forced into an early save by Edo Kayembe before Vakoun Bayo headed wide, but the ‘keeper could do nothing to prevent Festy Ebosele putting the home side ahead just before the half hour with a fine volley.

Luke O’Nien had a half-chance before the break but it was shortly after half-time that Sunderland hauled themselves level.

Patrick Roberts managed to break down the wing and when he crossed into the middle, Wilson Isidor was able to slide the ball home for his first goal for the club.

Both side created chances but it appeared that the game was heading towards a draw when Kwadwo Baah was fouled in the box to give Watford a penalty kick with less then ten minutes left on the clock.

Tom Dele-Bashiru stepped up to beat Patterson and earn Watford the points, with Sunderland remaining second in the table ahead of a home game with Derby County at the Stadium of Light.
