Sunderland Retain Unbeaten Run With WBA Draw
Sunderland made it ten games unbeaten in the EFL Championship with a draw at home to promotion rivals West Bromwich Albion at the Stadium of Light.
Despite the unbeaten run, the Bristol Street Motors-backed side was chasing a first win of the month after four successive draws, with the visitors also bidding to try and take a second win in three games after a difficult run of form.
Jobe Bellingham, Trai Hume and Patrick Roberts all returned for the Black Cats in front of a crowd of just under 37,000 but it would be a game that was low on real opportunities in front of goal between two teams with strong defensive records.
Wilson Isidor had a deflected shot saved by Alex Palmer in the first half in the best opportunity for the home side, with former Sunderland forward Josh Maja spurning West Brom’s best chance when he failed to hit the target whilst well placed.
Isidor had a goal ruled out for off-side after the break as Sunderland chased the opener but the West Brom defence was able to stand firm – most notably when Chris Rigg saw his effort blocked inside the box.
The goalless draw, alongside results elsewhere, saw Sunderland slip out of the automatic promotion spots to sit in fourth ahead of a huge game on Friday evening away at Sheffield United.
