Sunderland returned to winning ways in the EFL Championship with victory in the first Wear-Tees derby of the season at the Stadium of Light.

The Bristol Street Motors-backed side went into the game bidding to return to winning ways after suffering a first defeat of the campaign in the previous game away at Plymouth Argyle.

‘Boro had an early chance to take the lead in the game when Tommy Conway saw a header clip the bar before Sunderland had their first real opportunity when Eliezer Mayenda broke through only for the visiting defence to see off the danger.

Trai Hume was looking to escape with a booking for a foul on Emmanuel Latte Lath as ‘Boro continued to press but it was Sunderland who then grabbed the lead.

Patrick Roberts cut in from the right hand side and sent in a cross-shot that deflected into the path of teenager Chris Rigg, and with goalkeeper Seny Dieng having already gone to ground, he was able to neatly backheel the ball into an empty net to give his side the lead.

Sunderland had calls for a penalty just before the break when Romain Mundle was felled in the box, but the referee waved away the protests and ‘Boro then almost drew level when Latte Lath managed to get ahead of his man but could only loft an effort over the cross bar.

Roberts came close to a second after the break with a curling shot that went just wide of the post, whilst Mundle then struck the post with a late free-kick that would have made the three points even more secure.

As it was, the single goal was enough to wrap up a win that means Sunderland remain unbeaten at home this season with no goals conceded, and leaves Regis Le Bris and his team second in the Championship standings.
