The Impact Of The EFL On The European Championships

The Impact Of The EFL On The European Championships

The European Championships may have ended in disappointment for the England team after defeat to Spain in the final, but one huge positive from the tournament was the impact on the competition of the English Football League.

As an official partner of the EFL – and title sponsor of the Bristol Street Motors Trophy – we took the opportunity to explore how many players called up to appear in the tournament had links to the EFL, either through making appearances in the Championship, League One or League Two, or having appeared in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy under its various guises.

Of the 24 teams that qualified to take part in the Euros, an impressive 75% per cent called up a player with links to the EFL with only Switzerland, Croatia, Italy, France, Romania and the Ukraine not naming any player to have appeared in the EFL.

In total, 77 players were named in the various squads who have made an EFL appearance – just under 12.5% of the 624 players who were called up by the competing nations.

Understandably, England had the most players called up who have appeared in the EFL – with 19 players who had played a league came at some point during the careers.

Of those, Ivan Toney, Ollie Watkins, Eberechi Eze, Dean Henderson, Jordan Pickford and Aaron Ramsdale had all played at League Two level at some stage.

Beyond that, a further four players hadn’t played in the League but had appeared in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy in the shape of Bukayo Saka, Cole Palmer, Declan Rice and Kobbie Mainoo.

Scotland come in a close second, with a total of 18 players having appeared in either the EFL or the Bristol Street Motors Trophy, followed by Denmark on five.

Eventual champions Spain had both David Raya and Ayoze Perez in their tournament squad who had made EFL appearances.

A full rundown of the players who were called up for the Euros with ties to the EFL through the League or Bristol Street Motors Trophy can be found below.
