What to Expect from Ford's All-Electric Explorer

Ford recently unveiled its new Explorer model - and it has already generated plenty of interest.

The all-electric crossover will be the first in a new wave of innovative EVs from Ford.

The Explorer is set to combine German engineering with American styling. But what exactly can you expect to see?

Martin Sander, General Manager, Ford Model e, Europe commented: “Explorer is a trailblazer for a new breed of exciting Ford electric vehicles. Steeped in our American roots but built in Cologne for our customers in Europe, it is road trip-ready for the big adventures and fully loaded with everything our customers will need for their daily drives.”

Exterior Styling

The new Ford Explorer will be built on the same platform as the Volkswagen ID.4. This comes as a result of an ongoing partnership between the manufacturers.

The Explorer has a commanding stance that is primed for adventure. Projecting a futuristic image, it features a floating roof. There’s also an option to add a full-length panoramic roof, to flood the interior with light.

At the front of the vehicle, Ford’s iconic shield sits in place of a traditional grille. It’s framed by signature LED headlights and a coast-to-coast trim. This details eye-catching 'EXPLORER' lettering.

The rear design is boxy and features smart design details - with LED lights and a further coast-to-coast strip.

The Explorer will be available in several colour options, including 'Arctic Blue' and 'Blue My Mind'. Individuals can also choose from a selection of aerodynamically optimised alloy wheels.

Interior Design

Inside, occupants will be able to relax in the spacious and technologically focused cabin. With a modern and minimalistic design, connectivity has been prioritised.

An adjustable 15-inch portrait infotainment screen features Ford’s intelligent SYNC Move software. This comes with wireless functionality, including Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and smartphone charging.

Ford’s ‘My Private Locker’ sits behind the infotainment screen. This is a hidden space suitable for storing phones, wallets and other valuable items. There is also a ‘MegaConsole’ in the centre to house other belongings – it's large enough to store a 15-inch laptop, if needed.

A raft of innovative technology features help to enhance safety and convenience. With ultrasonic sensors, cameras, and radars, Ford's Advanced Driver Assistance Systems have everything covered.

The front seats have been ergonomically designed to offer high levels of support. Drivers have the option of massage functionality for extra comfort on long journeys. Sleek ambient lighting gives occupants the choice of ten colours to suit their mood. Together with soft-touch materials throughout the cabin, the Explorer feels truly luxurious.

The boot is spacious with an impressive cargo-carrying capacity of 450 litres. This extends to 1,400 litres with a moveable floor and folding rear seats.

Performance

The Explorer line-up will start with a 168bhp rear-wheel-drive model featuring a 55kWh battery. This is set to provide a range of up to 218 miles.  Next in line is the 282bhp single-motor option with an 82kWh battery. This should offer an anticipated range of up to 335 miles. The flagship Explorer will feature the same 82kWh battery. However, the addition of dual motors will produce 335bhp – and a range of up to 305 miles.

All models will have the capacity to charge from 10-80% in around 25 minutes using a rapid DC charge point. Through Ford’s Blue Oval Charging Network, drivers will have access to over 21,000 public charge points across the UK.

Ford has committed to providing a fully electric range of passenger vehicles in Europe by 2030. The Explorer will be an exciting addition to this electrification plan.

Pricing details will be released closer to the Explorer’s launch, later this year.
