Widnes Vikings Appoint Locally-Born Steve Roberts as General Manager

Steve Roberts started out in broadcast journalism, and along the way gathered a vast knowledge base within marketing, business development and public relations.

A passion for his community and for the place the Widnes Vikings holds there has been strong with Steve from a very early age, as a lifelong supporter of the club. As an adult, he has continued providing his support over the years, giving his time to help the club with supporter events and media development.

The Widnes Vikings General Manager role will support the club's strategic developments, along with communication and commercial efforts. Steve will also provide assistance to the Vikings’ board and CEO, with the aim of growing and developing the club to their ever-higher ambitions.

Steve says: “I'm really looking forward to playing a part in the next chapter of the Vikings story. Its rich heritage and history, alongside its solid fanbase and facilities makes it uniquely placed to punch its weight, not only in the local and regional community, but in the professional game as well.

“Living in the town all my life, leaves me in no doubt about the passion and effort so many people are always willing to contribute to its success. I'm grateful for the opportunity to officially join in.”

Phil Finney, CEO of Widnes Vikings, says: “Steve is a talented, dedicated and honest man, who cares about his club and his community. His knowledge, wisdom and expertise will add real value to Widnes Vikings.

“As the club begins to stabilise from the challenges of previous years, it is vital that we add capacity to grow for the future. Steve will play an important role in that progression, bringing intelligence, passion and experience to our team.

“We recognise the commitment of him leaving a role and organisation that he loved to work for the club. This is a real testament to his respect for Widnes Vikings and the conviction he has that he can make a difference here.”
